Beef Information

Market Beef Show

New for 2019!
British Breeds Class: enter your market beef in the British Breeds Class (Papers will be required as proof of British Breed.)
- Eligible Breeds: Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn
  • To be eligible for exhibition, the youth must have owned and cared for the market beef since July 1st of the current year.
  • Market Beef Cattle Exhibitors that Exhibit cattle at Arksarben are subject to allowing their projects to be used for the Livestock Judging Contest. Refusal will result in not being eligible to exhibit the following year at Arksarben.
  • Positive identification is required on all market beef entries.
  • Positive DNA identification is achieved by submitting DNA hair samples from all market beef that are being considered for exhibition
  • Nose leads or nose rings will not be permitted on the grounds.
Weight Declaration
  • Exhibitors will self-declare the market beef’s weight utilizing a weigh-card system. All weigh-cards will be due at check-in.
  • Show management will weigh first and second place animals in each class. A 5% variance from the weigh-card weight will be allowed. Animals not meeting the 5% variance either above or below the weigh-in weight will be lowered one ribbon group and will not be eligible for any champion awards.
  • The minimum weight for market beef is 1000 pounds with no maximum weight limit.
  • If minimum weight is stated on weigh-card, the reweight variance will only allow plus 5%. Minus 5% will not be accepted as it is below minimum weight.

·Show Structure

  • The top two animals from each class will compete for Division Champion and Reserve Division Champion. The Division Champion and Reserve Division Champion will compete for Grand Champion Market Beef and Reserve Grand Champion Market Beef.
  • The Champion Calf Challenge “Live” Calf will compete for Grand Champion Market Beef.
  • Six market beef will be selected for sale in the Purple Ribbon Auction (six head). They include Grand Champion Market Beef, Reserve Grand Champion Market Beef, Champ British Breeds plus three. All beef selected for the Purple Ribbon Auction must go to harvest.
  • Market beef will be exhibited from light to heavy within each division.
  • If a beef animal gets away from an exhibitor more than three times in the show ring, they will be dismissed from the class.

Breeding Heifer Show

  • To be eligible for exhibition, breeding heifers must be registered by the official breed association in the name of the youth or immediate family member or in partnership with a parent or guardian, family or farm name, and must be owned by the time of entry.
  • All breeding heifers must be identified by a legible tattoo (and brand where required by the breed association) to affirm ownership. No Bangs tattoos will be accepted for identification.
  • Registration papers should be presented at the check-in chute. Animals whose registration papers are not approved or are still pending will show in the commercial class.
  • Heifers entered in the Feeder Calf Show are not eligible for the Breeding Heifer Show.
  • Only breeding heifers recognized as registered and eligible to show by their respective breed associations will be allowed to compete in the breed classes.
  • Breeding Heifers will be show by breed.
  • To be eligible for the commercial breeding heifer class, each heifer must have a known birthdate and be identified by an ear tattoo. No Bangs tattoos or herd tags will be an acceptable form of identification.
  • Breeding Beef Exhibitors that Exhibit heifers at Aksarben are subject to allowing their projects to be used for the Livestock Judging Contest. Refusal will subject in withholding of premiums.
  • No nurse cows or dams of feeder calves will be allowed on the stock show grounds.
  • Nose leads or nose rings will not be permitted on the grounds.
Show Structure
  • Classes in the Breeding Heifer Show will be divided by breeds and then by age within the breed.
  • Any registered heifers not meeting breed requirements or other eligibility rules will go into the Commercial class.
  • Classes are determined by age.
  • The top two animals from each class will compete for Breed Champion and Reserve Breed Champion of their breed. Each breed’s Champion and Reserve Champion will compete for the Supreme Champion Breeding Heifer. The judge will then use Champion and Reserve Breed Champions to pick through fifth place. (There will be a top five.)
  • If a beef animal gets away from an exhibitor more than three times in the show ring, they will be dismissed from the class.

Breeding Heifer Show Awards Sponsor

Feeder Calf Show

  • To be eligible for exhibition, the youth must have owned and cared for the feeder calf since June 15.
  • Heifer calves and steer calves born during the current year, after January 1 and before June 1 are eligible to be entered.
  • No bulls will be allowed to show. If there is any evidence of testicular development by manual palpation of the scrotum, the animal will be disqualified.
  • It is preferred that all feeder calves be dehorned.
  • Heifer calves shown in the breeding beef show are not eligible for the Feeder Calf Show.
  • Positive identification is required on all feeder calf entries. All animals must be tagged and or tattooed.
  • Positive identification required to match entry.
  • DNA is not required for feeder calves.
  • No substitutions after entry for feeder calves.
  • No nurse cows or dams of feeder calves will be allowed on the stock show grounds.
  • Nose leads or nose rings will not be permitted on the grounds.
Show Structure
  • There will be separate divisions for steers and heifers.
  • Class cuts will be based off weight.
  • The top two animals from each heifer class will compete for Grand Champion Feeder Heifer and Reserve Grand Champion Feeder Heifer.
  • The top two animals from each steer class will compete for Grand Champion Feeder Steer and Reserve Grand Champion Feeder Steer.
  • The champion feeder steer and champion feeder heifer will compete for the grand champion feeder calf.
  • If a beef animal gets away from an exhibitor more than three times in the show ring, they will be dismissed from the class.
